Central West TAFE first year Bricklaying and Carpentry Apprentices have been given the opportunity by local business Geraldton Hire and Scaffolding Services to train in the basics of scaffolding in the real work environment.
On Tuesday 24th November Geraldton Hire and Scaffolding played host to 30 students, overseen by Central West TAFE Lecturer Peter Watters, who learnt to erect scaffolding and identify occupational health and safety risks.
Central West TAFE has had a close partnership with Geraldton Hire and Scaffolding over the past 9 years, providing equipment for training and now welcoming classes onto their work site. Mr. Jon Davies, Manager of Geraldton Hire & Scaffolding said “We recognize the importance of the apprentices learning from the beginning what a scaffold structure should look like on a work site, it is an important part of the overall work site learning experience”.
Central West TAFE Construction and Rural Industries Director Mr. Matt Silvester said, “The College is particularly grateful for the commitment and involvement that Geraldton Hire and Scaffolding has shown in helping to facilitate the training of construction apprentices at their premises, including the guidance and advice provided by several of their experienced staff”.
The number of Carpentry apprentices studying at Central West TAFE has doubled over the past 5 years.
