Sustainability @ Durack

RNL imageDurack Institute of Technology wants to encourage staff and students to Refill NOT Landfill. The Geraldton Campus canteen now stocks "multi use" coffee cups to encourage re use rather than using polystyrene foam or paper cups. As an incentive, the Canteen provides a 50 cent discount if staff and student use a refillable cup or mug rather than a one use disposal cup.

RNL imageDurack Institute introduced aluminium recycling at the Geraldton campus. A large centralised bin has been installed at the campus and smaller bins have been strategically placed in the canteen and staff tea rooms to encourage staff and students to recycle their cans. Staff and students are also encouraged to recycle their cans at home and to bring them into the Institute.

RNL imageThink B4 U Print, is a multi faceted approach aimed at reducing the amount of paper used by staff and students. A number of initiatives have been introduced including Durack's paper saving mascot "Print Saving Pete". Pete appears on the desktop wallpaper in various stages of wellness according to the weekly paper usage information as compared with the same time in the previous year. RNL imageDurack has set up a newspaper collection drop off point at the Geraldton Campus, to allow staff and students to recycle their newspapers from home, Durack will arrange for the newspapers will be taken to Jack's Shed a local newspaper recycling collection point. Durack supports this recycling initiative as it raises critical funding for a essential community projects.

RNL imageDurack Institute's Aquifer Storage Recovery (ASR) system was installed in 2010. This system involves using the existing central storm water drainage systems from buildings and car parks to direct captured rain water to a naturally occurring sump, located to the east of the campus. The recharged rain water is then drawn from the ground through a series of bores and is used for irrigating the campus lawns and gardens during the warmer, drier, summer months. The ASR aims to reduce Durack's scheme water usage by 40 million litres per annum. To understand the ASR in more detail, click on the picture link to view an informative video.
RNL imageLaunched in 2009, Durack's SPOT program aims to provide educational and promotional Sustainability information to Durack's staff and students. The Institute has installed smart meters to the main switchboard and to other high energy use switchboards, to monitor energy usage across the Institute. An energy monitoring dashboard, designed by Institute staff, displays comparative graphs, consumption counters and usage dials in real time, in a user friendly format. The energy monitoring dashboard has been installed on the Institutes intranet for access by all staff, and is also being displayed on two 42" LED televisions located in the Institute's Canteen.
