New Durack Creche serves dual purpose

09 February 2016

This year Durack Institute of Technology is offering a new crèche facility for students and staff - believed to be the first TAFE in regional WA to offer this type of service.

The brand new child care facility serves a dual purpose; allowing students to gain hands-on learning experience in the industry-simulated crèche environment, as they study towards qualifications in child care.

But that’s not all; the nationally recognised child care qualifications are now available to study in Open Learning mode, which is a combination of online learning and face to face tutorials.

Durack Institute of Technology’s Health, Education and Community Services Training Director, Karen Watts , said Durack is excited to offer the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care and the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care in Open Learning study mode this year.

“Students can gain a nationally recognised qualification while studying online at their own pace and in their own time,” she said.

“We will also offer four face-to-face tutorials on campus each week, which students can attend if they would like one-on-one guidance.”

“We have listened to the feedback of local industry and we are very pleased to have the crèche ready for students to develop their skills in a hands-on environment, supervised by our experienced and qualified child care lecturers.”

Managing Director of Durack Institute of Technology, Bill Swetman, said the crèche is a great initiative for both students and staff to have their children cared for.

“The crèche is an innovative idea and will deliver advantages to both students and staff of Durack, with the opportunity to jointly learn in the facility and also have children cared for in a welcoming and safe environment.”

The Durack Crèche is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9am and noon, at the cost of a gold coin donation. Children attending the Crèche must be a minimum of six months old, and the parent or guardian of the child must remain on the Fitzgerald campus while their child is in the Crèche. Prior bookings are essential.
