2010 Scholarshps

Regional tertiary education students are benefiting from the opportunities to study locally through the Durack Institute of Technology Scholarship program.

The support of this program from local industry partners has ensured its success over the past 3 years. To date 41 students have been assisted through the initiative.

The 2010 Geraldton Campus scholarships were presented at a morning tea on 5th May with 16 student recipients announced.  Scholarship recipients are selected via a competitive selection process and the recipients receive $500 towards course fees, resource requirements or accommodation at Pepperell Village.

Mr Bert Beevers, Managing Director of Durack Institute of Technology said, “The scholarships are offered to students participating in accredited training within a variety of industries. The initiative is aimed at engaging students in training and pathways to higher level qualifications to ensure skilled workers train and remain in our region”.

The 2010 scholarships and recipients are Hon. Brian Ellis MLC Certificate IV in Information Technology Scholarship - Samuel MacLachlan, Dalgleish Catering Certificate IV in Hospitality (Supervision) Scholarship - Hannelore Faessler, Department for Child Protection Diploma of Youth Work Scholarship - Vicki Martyn, Hon. Grant Woodhams MLA Diploma of Enrolled Nursing Scholarship - Critishia Buckland, GHD Certificate IV in Environmental Science Scholarship - Amanda Melling, Hon. Ian Blayney MLA Certificate IV in Conservation & Land Management Scholarship - Julie Walker, Market Creations Diploma in Information Technology (Multimedia) Scholarship - Brock White, Mid Coast Partners Diploma of Accounting Scholarship - Peter Gaze, Midwest Development Commission Certificate IV in Laboratory Technology Scholarship - Blake Sandler, STAY Diploma of Community Services Scholarship - Nicole Matheson and St John of God Health Care Certificate IV in Health Science Foundations Scholarship - Jasmin Saunders.

In 2010 Rio Tinto formed a new partnership with Durack Institute of Technology in the form of the Rio Tinto Aboriginal Scholarship Program. A joint initiative between Rio Tinto and the Durack Institute of Technology, the scholarship program is designed to engage Aboriginal people in training programs that are directly linked to employment outcomes.

Semester One Rio Tinto Aboriginal Student Scholarship Recipients are Stacey Bonney, Nicole Donaldson, Wayne Green, Kylee Gwilliam and Louisa Rebbeck.

Mr. Beevers said, “As a result of the significant support and involvement of local organisations our students can benefit both financially and by forming relationships, in many cases with potentially future employers, by completing their qualifications locally”.
