Durack unveils first Environmental Science Diploma

Durack Institute of Technology will offer the first Diploma of Environmental Science (Management) in the Mid West in 2011.

Offering a pathway to university, the Batavia Coast Maritime Institute campus has 12-16 places available.

After completing the Diploma, students can look towards entering the second year of a Degree or explore employment opportunities.

“The Diploma is the perfect bridge for students who want to hold off on going to university,” said Durack Institute of Technology lecturer Wendy Dunn.

“We prepare them with real hands-on experience through a number of projects, including at least one major field trip.”

A successful pilot programme for Certificate III and Certificate IV was held this year. The eight students are now in the final stages of the course and are all set to continue study or employment in the field.

During the pilot they put their newly learned skills to the test with a field trip to Kalbarri National Park.

“We provide a perfect blend of theory and practical, which better prepares students for real life situations,” said Dr Suresh Job, Training Director of Marine, Applied & Environmental Sciences.

Qualifications in Environmental Science can lead to employment in mining, agriculture, environmental control, the Department of Water, the Department of Environment and Conservation, catchment groups and other similar fields.

For entry into the Diploma, applicants are required to have completed a Certificate IV in Environmental Science (Management) or have relevant work experience.

A minimum of Year 10 completion is required for acceptance into the Certificate III level, which continues on to Certificate IV and the potential of undertaking the Diploma.

To apply, visit www.durack.edu.au by November 26 or call Durack Institute of Technology on 9956 2700 for more information.

Semester One 2011 gets underway on January 31, 2011.
