Parents and Guardians Information

Studying at Durack is a great start for your child's career aspirations.

If your child is under 18 you may have concerns about the transition from school to an adult employment focussed training environment. As an adult environment we expect all students to behave in a responsible, mature manner and abide by the Student Code of Conduct.

The following information will assist you in understanding what happens in this adult learning environment.

Inductions & Attendance

  • At the course induction your child will receive a course program and timetable
  • Discuss this with your child to remove any transport concerns and that they can participate in out of class activities
  • Attendance is recorded. If your child is under 18 you will be notified within three days of any absence. If your child is an apprentice, their employer will be notified
  • Where legally required of us, your child's attendance will be reported to the Department of Education

Classroom Environment

We are an adult learning environment focussed on developing the skills and knowledge required for the workplace. This means that your child

  • Is responsible for their own learning and must be able to manage their workload. However, lecturers can provide assistance when needed
  • Will be in classes with adult students of all ages
  • May be required to work on projects outside of class hours with adult students
  • Will share facilities, such as the library, canteen and computer labs with adult students
  • May have lengthy breaks between classes or days when no classes are held
  • Will be unsupervised if a daytime class is cancelled, as alternative study options will not be provided
  • Will be unsupervised if a daytime class finishes early
  • Attending a class after hours and finishing early will be supervised by the lecturer until the scheduled finish time
  • May be required to undertake assignments outside of class time

Direct supervision outside of class time is not provided.

  • Information about excursions will be provided prior to the event
  • Written parental consent is required for your child if they are under 18. If no parental consent is given, your child will not be able to go on the excursion
  • Your child may be required to make their own way to excursions

Health & Safety

  • We strive to provide a healthy and safe environment for all students
  • Bullying and any form of harassment is not accepted
  • As part of our commitment you are asked to sign and return our Health Information and Parent Guardian Consent form. Any medical information provided will be kept confidential

  • We do not cover students for personal accident, loss or any damage to property when on campus
  • Personal accident cover is provided if your child as part of their study undertakes unpaid work experience, attends any official camp, excursion, trip or other off campus activities
